Wag the Dog

Wag the Dog

Last week in my public relations class we watched the movie “Way the Dog”. It is a PR based movie about a producer and a PR practitioner who creates a ‘fake war’ with Albania to get people’s minds off of the Presidents scandalous allegations during re-election. I had never seen or even heard about this movie and it has a lot of famous people in it. Overall, the movie was good a nice behind the scenes movie.

I believe that the PR practitioner totally embodies the situational orientation. He had many ongoing attempts to bring up the President’s percentage in the polls before Election Day. Clearly, he was trying to make decisions that produced the most votes. He and his coworkers spun each event to give the president a positive image, every step of the way and this really showed me how important the Presidents image is. For example, the tape on the news of the fake war and the girl is running. From the Code of Ethics I think it was the downfall of the PR practitioner. Overall, the movies story line was primarily fabricated. The main thing I thought about while watching this movie was how in real life people could be making up the stuff we watch on the news.

The meaning behind the phrase Wag the Dog is significant to the movie because it’s about being able to control the outcome of things. In the movie it is all about controlling the public in similarity to being able to control a dog’s wagging tail. It all fits together in some weird way. Overall, the movie makes all PR practitioners look like play masters and they can control the outcome of just about anything.

Public Relation Eras

My era was evolving practice. It sounds boring but it really was cool. I got to know a lot about how public relations moved through the times. I learned that before the 1920s public relations was just another part of journalistic function. Public relations helped people voice their thoughts on Vietnam War, civil rights, environmental movements and women’s rights. Public relations also moved away from impersonal meetings and moved to more one on one meetings. PR is not that old and the internet became a great tool for them because it also came available to the public and very easy to use about the same time. Everyone uses the internet because it is a great, easy, and fast way to get information. Well, Public Relations took advantage of that. What surprised me about this era was how fast public relations came into its own. From about the 1970s to the 2000s PR really moved up in the business world. It really showed people that it was a great helping tool and made a lot of things more easier. Having a middle man that looks out for you it a great thing to have. What I would like to know more about would have to be how people can trust the internet because that is a really big part of today’s world and PR does use a lot of it. How do people know that someone is really going to help them over the internet? Overall, I think I learned a lot about the up coming of public relations it really gave me some good history on my career.

My Thoughts on Twitter

Hey yall Nicole here so I was instrcuted to use Twitter for my public relations class so I did. I went in and signed up for it and  it was very easy to do. I followed all the guidelines it gave me and I also made a new background of one of my pictures. When I first started Twitter I did not like it at all because I have used facebook in the past and I though facebook was a better networking site. Glossy Twitter IconsAfter doing a week of Twitter I got the hang of it and I was talking to people about things I needed to know and I helped some people out too. Once I started following people and they followed me I really started using it because people wanted to know what I was doing and I enjoyed talking back to them. Overall I would say Twitter is a good way to network and get your name out there but I did have to start watching who I was adding because I was getting followed by some people I did not know just a little bit. Well, I have grown to enjoy Twitter so I hope it helps me later on down the road. I would definitely tell my friends to use Twitter because it is not only used by public relation people but everyone uses it. My roommates are nursing majors and I for sure think if they had a question about nursing they would have people to help them really fast. Well, I like Twitter now it was a slow start but I really do enjoy it now.
